Day 112 – We Can Read

Our playthings aren’t much
to play with;
instead our room’s filled
with books

but we can read
and that’s all we need

we don’t have what money can buy
but we can fly

Day 55 – Speaking in Tongues

I wanna write that poem
the one that’s been festering like a bullet wound
for ten years,
rips through like a migraine in the dark
though I desperately need the sleep-
the old war wound
from battles I never fought
deaths I never died
but felt every sting

I want to grow a rose so perfect
and then crush it between two sheets of paper
five thousand other poems just like it
inside your grandmother’s pillowcase

I wanna sell that poem for thirty silver pieces
publish that pain and buy a rocket and some morphine
and never feel again

And I’ve been trying
lord knows I’ve been trying
but it comes out like it always has
for the last ten years
and I’m so tired
of speaking in tongues

Day 51 – Gunslingers

there were some days
when you tapped a vein
and i knew
you had me beat
without a doubt

there’d be nothing to fight about
if that wasn’t the case

there are some days
when i still open a book
and find you
in folded papers
and i know

i’ve got one hell of a rival
still out there

Day 18 – Mormons

Maybe I shouldn’t have said all that
about the magic underwear
and the magic gold tablets

and maybe I shouldn’t have laughed
when you said they
“ascended back into the heavens.”

I probably shouldn’t have asked
if you got here
on a bike.

I didn’t have to take your book
but I knew it meant
someone else
wouldn’t read it.

I’m sorry your beliefs are
foreign and hilarious to me
since I claim to be so tolerant

but you rang my bell
and you asked for it.

Year 2: Day 114 – Hey Good Morning

Hey good morning
you’re finally up
I wanted to tell you
I hate this book
that you gave me.

I made you some bacon
so you won’t be mad
while you’re telling me
how in the world
this plot makes sense.

I won’t be convinced
but I will wrestle you
after breakfast
and cover your mouth
when you try to explain
how anyone
could like that book.

When you’re at work
I will sneak it inside
the Christmas box
and pretend I lost it
and I will come back
from the bookstore
with something better
for you to read.

And I will kiss you goodnight
and say I absolutely
couldn’t love you
if your taste in books
was any worse,
but thank goodness
you have me.

Year 2: Day 104 – Now Do You Believe?

Now do you believe
that we are never-ending,
that we can speak across the universe
in the language only we know?

When I had counted you gone
but could not feel right
without writing your name
on the first page,

and you had counted me gone
but could not feel right
without opening that book
to find your name

do you believe it’s been long enough
to prove us blood?

When I wrote though I knew
you weren’t reading,
but I couldn’t help myself

and you knew that I wasn’t
writing for you,
but you couldn’t help yourself

do you believe we are eternal,
long-lost brother, do you believe
in sibling souls, do you believe
we could’ve been found
any other way?
