Day 101 – Take Two

She said take two
when you’re stressed
and let me know
how that works

But I get so down
that I take three
or four or five

One time I took
the whole bottle
and I showed up at her door
in a panic-

“What’ll happen to me now?”

So she gave me gin and tonic
and she told me not to worry-
“It’ll all be over soon anyhow”

She peeled back the label-
they were candy after all!
and I haven’t worried much
ever since.

Day 87 – Two Sweaters

I remember the same two sweaters-
one plum and the other maroon-
that had to last the whole winter
and how it bothered me
that my old Lion King sneakers didn’t match
and how it bothered me
to think everyone would notice.

I remember being so pleased
at being allowed to invite over a classmate
and taking her to my closet
to show her my outfits
and knowing those two purple sweaters I hated
were the best I had to show.

I remember the girl who came over;
her sneakers didn’t match, either.
I don’t know where she is
but I have so many sweaters now.

Day 68 – Two Camps

They say something is better
than nothing
even if it’s not your best-
to give at all
is to give more than

When I was younger
I would’ve hated that,
I would’ve said
not to bother-
I would’ve stuck my
picket sign in the ground
firmly in the camp
which demands
and kept on pretending
I could ever give it.

But I feel so old
and so grateful now,
for all the halfs and partways
I’ve been given,
all the somethings
that were better
than not.

Year 2: Day 156 – The Decimal Rap

In this world
where we all live
we got Ones and Twos
and you’ll have to forgive
me for lumpin’ ’em all
into two basic groups
but that’s just how it is,
that’s the honest truth.
We got Ones who live
like they’re never gonna die,
and every single day
is a slice of pie
and we got Twos who pray
like they could die tomorrow,
no time for fun,
they’re busy singin’ the sorrow,
and neither group ever really
knows what’s up
they all drink the same water
from a dixie cup
and we all pick a side
to help us get by
except me…
and where am I?

somewhere in between,
I’m a point in the middle
of two extremes,
I can’t stay with the Twos
where I was raised
but I can’t join the Ones
because they’re kinda crazed.
an approximation,
a repeating counter
of my frustration.
I can’t live life
like it’s just for pleasure
but I know that every day
is absolutely a treasure.
an improper fraction
that never quite reaches a whole,
an abstraction.
I know there’s ways to argue,
make each side sound better
but until they reach a compromise,
I’m dead center.
before I leave this joint-
doesn’t every¬†whole number
have an invisible point?

Year 2: Day 140 – Two Fools

A fool man will never stop
trying to get what he doesn’t want
‘cuz a fool man never wants
what he can get.

A fool woman never stops
waiting for what she thinks she wants
‘cuz a fool woman never wants
what she can get.

When a fool woman falls
for a fool man,
it don’t mean nothin’, baby,
just the world goin’ round

When two fools fall in love
it’s just another day
in the universe, baby,
just the world goin’ round
