Year 2: Day 127 – I Never Stole Your Boyfriend

I never stole your boyfriend-
never really-
all those times
we yanked him back and forth
or let him loose.

I knew he was yours
but I swear,
that first time,
I waited
’til you let him go.

But he was never really mine-
never really-
I could hear his wheels aching
in the middle of the night;
though his heart was in my hands
it thought of you.

And it doesn’t matter now-
not really-
all those times
we yanked him back and forth
or let him loose;

we were just kid gladiators
scuffling for a prize
that neither of us wanted
after all.

It doesn’t matter now-
not really-
but years later
it still has a place with me.

All our hearts
got so torn up and mangled;
where there was love
we turned it into sport,

and though I won that battle
I lost too much
and so did he,
so much was broken
we could never put to rights.

In the end, it stays with me,
how hard I fought
to win that war
because it was no triumph,
not a victory at all.

In the end, it stays with me,
how hard I fought
to win that war
because
I never stole your boyfriend-
never really.

Day 315 – Crawl If I Have To

It’s the attitude that saves a man
from lying down and dying,
saves a heart from ceasing,
saves a soul from fading,

that I would rather hurt than quit,
will ache before I’ll stop.

It’s the knowledge of our particular wounds,
the throbbing mess we face, eyes wide,
that proclaims for us “it is not in vain,”
and powers us further on.

I know where my bruises come from.
I know what they’ll always be.

I know that this knotted sore in my chest
will not heal, and I do not try.

But I will crawl if I have to,
in order that I will one day run
leaving a trail of blood, if that may be.
